Two decades of location-based games on the city streets: How facilitation of social gameplay and inclusiveness has changed.
The concept of pervasive games has been around since 1960s, but how especially the urban streets allow and facilitate gameplay has changed during the last two decades, which has led to these games finally realizing their potential. This article is based on literature and experiences on pervasive and location-based mobile games from 2000 on. The article draws a timeline of changes and technological advancements that have led to current games like Pokémon GO. The potential of new technologies, as they are achieving better mobility and accessibility, is discussed from the perspective of their social implications and accessibility.
